INFO DARI MALAYSIAN PHARMACEUTICAL SOCIETY
USM will have country?s first nuclear pharmacy
GEORGE TOWN: After being conferred the nation’s only Apex (Accelerated Programme for Excellence) varsity, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) will again make history when the country’s first Nuclear Pharmacy Centre is set up.
The ambitious project is already in the planning phase.
It would be a collaboration between Japanese company Sumimoto and USM, its School of Pharmaceutical Sciences dean Assoc Prof Dr Syed Azhar Syed Sulaiman told a press conference at the university yesterday.
“The centre could even serve as a nuclear pharmacy hub catering to institutions and hospitals in the Asean region,” he said.
He added that despite cancer fast becoming the second highest cause of death in the country, there is no centre that is fully equipped to address the diagnosis and treatment of cancer using nuclear-based pharmaceutical products.
“It will cost more than RM30mil to set up the centre and we have already purchased a machine related to cancer treatment,” he said.
